FUNimation put up a second clip back on Monday sampling Soul Eater's dub. This time it is a clip from episode 2, so we get to hear Black Star and Tsubaki in action.
Brittney Karbowski is voicing Black Star, so FUNimation is in effect copying the Japanese by casting a female in the role. Problem is, Black Star sounds far more feminine in English. Then again, Brittney does not come off nearly as irritating as Yumiko Kobayashi did, so maybe Black Star sounding more like a girl is not all bad.
On the other hand, Monical Rial is passable as Tsubaki. While she doesn't have the voice to match Kaori Nazuka in tone, Monica seems to be doing a decent job despite the fact that she makes Tsubaki sound quite a bit older than she actually is. This is a problem that plagues most dubs, however, so it doesn't really bother me that much.
Keep the dub samplings coming, FUNimation!

UGH! You were right, way too feminine! I won't ever complain about a female playing a male, especially a boy character. It often works very well. But the girlish voice is clearly showing through & it doesn't fit Black Star, at all.
Monica Rial is iconic (at least to me), because of the roles she's played & I've loved (Noir, Azumanga Daioh & RahXephon especially) & based on those roles I thought this would be a good fit. But she sounds too much like Nyamo from Azumanga Daioh & I was expecting or hoping for something closer to Kirika.
I'm complaining alot, but I'm still going to check out the dub. Dubbed anime is part of my anime roots & needs to be supported. Keep the posts coming.
The feminine tone to his voice doesn't exactly bother me all that much. But, again, the corniness of the lines in this episode just reinforces my fear that they got the wrong people working on translating the original Japanese. Than again, I've always kinda found the first few episodes' over-explanatory writing corny, even in the original Japanese, so I'll have my fingers crossed for the rest of the series.
